Mercedes A-Class L Sedan Fully Unveiled In China

Before the Beijing Auto Show opened its doors, a photo of the Mercedes A-Class L Sedan was leaked and we were treated to a backdrop of the production ready model. Now the sedan has finally broken cover today at the auto show.

A collaboration between Daimler and BAIC Motor, the A-Class L we see here is a sedan that’s tailored specifically for the Chinese market. It’s like Mercedes’ answer to those who would have gone for the Maybach SUV if it wasn’t so bulky.

According to CarScoops, the A-Class L Sedan comes with a wealth of technology including driving assistance systems borrowed from the S-Class, the new MBUX system with intelligent voice control and natural speech recognition, which is said to be fluent in several Chinese dialects.

Underpinning the new A-Class sedan is an updated version of Mercedes’ Modular Front-drive Architecture (MFA2) platform, which comes with weight reduction and the option for alternative drivetrains.

Sitting on said platform is an initial offering of a 1.33-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 100 kW (136 PS) and 120 kW (163 PS) of power. Later down the road, customers can opt for the 2.0-liter four-pot model cranking out 140 kW (190 PS). No matter which powertrain you go with, they’ll both come standard with a 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission.

Those outside of China will have to wait for Mercedes to reveal the global version of the saloon in the second half of this year.

I love how aggressive the front end looks but as you turn to the side it hints to the S-Class due to its extended wheelbase.
Hopefully even without the stretch it still looks close enough to the L version.

Honestly could care less if it's as long as the L-version so long as everything else, including the performance specs remain largely unchanged. I think the global A-Class will look similar if not identical to the China spec model, the only difference seems to be the wheelbase from what I can tell.
